Microsoft on the Environment Round Table (Part II)

Act One, Scene II. In this second look at a round table of Microsofties talking about the environment, we gaze our attention toward the future and how you as a student will be affected.

The main take-away seems to be that prioritizing the environment in all that you do will become increasingly more important. This will also lead to new opportunities for both entrepreneurs and those working for large corporations alike. Michael specifically sites an example about a business student who thinks there is a great opportunity to help out the environment........ an opportunity to make money, he claims. Clearly, his passion and pursuit are not quite matched, but other people really do believe the environment is a worthy cause and do put their efforts into making it better.

Microsoft on the Environment Round Table (Part I)

With Earth Day right around the corner, I had a chance to sit in on a round table discussion with Microsofties and show you how they see the environment becoming increasingly more important to industry and consumers. You will hear from Microsoft Research's Feng Zhao, Environmental Technologist Mark Aggar, Program Manager Stephen Berard (he's behind some of the coolest power features in Windows), Marketing Communications Manager Michael Walsh, and a Microsoftie that on her own initiative started an environment-focused group internally: Tina Tam.

The crew covers topics such as sustainable computing now and in the future. One of my favorite points was about how sleep states of electronics really work and how much power something uses in the "off" state--is it really off? Much like safety in cars today has become a standard, designing with the environment in mind is quickly rising in priority and will hopefully soon be the norm, according to Mark.

This is Part I of a two part discussion, the second will cover what opportunities there are for students in this space.

Server Core - Introduction

Server Core is an installation option for Windows Server 2008, that is capable of five well-known server roles: File Server, DHCP Server, DNS Server, Media Services, and Active Directory. Please note that Server Core is not a development platform for new server applications. Although Server Core is not an application platform, it does support the development of management tools, utilities, and agents.

My friend Brett visited campus on Monday for some meetings and on our way to lunch, the fountains between my building and the Cafe looked a little different... it seems that the OneCare team decided to color the water green and even drop in a bunch of green beach balls. It looked pretty awesome and is just another small reminder of how cool this place really is :)

Bill Gates talks about Free Software, Students, and Technology

How would you like a free copy of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008? How about the entire Microsoft Expression Studio? Not enough...... how about Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and more?

For once, something that sounds too good to be true really is this good and really is true. Starting today (or soon in some areas), students worldwide will be able to download our professional development and design tools for free! It's called DreamSpark and it is upon us.

We got a few minutes with the guy himself, Mr. Bill Gates, to talk about his thoughts on this student opportunity. We also discussed the fast pace of technology and how students can best deal with that. Finally, I gave him a chance to think about what he would do if he were 17 years old again and starting up the next big company. His answer was--are you sitting down because this one was a real shocker--software!

We figured since one 8er already won a PC and another 8er won a Zune, we should hook you guys up with something cool too... I better see some smiles in the comments! :)

Microsoft Facility Sneak Peak: Lincoln Square

My recent interview with Design Mastermind David Shadle took me over to our Lincoln Square offices. This is a new addition to the Microsoft campus in Bellevue, WA just a couple of miles from our main campus location in Redmond, WA.

This office has room for over 1,300 people from floors 14 to 28. It's the primary location for our North American Sales team so you probably will not find too many developers in this location. Personally, I think they have one of the better dining facilities, so I like to trek over there occasionally to meet up with some of my old Enterprise Group (my old organization) colleagues.

Since many of you have commented in the forums that you would like to see more of how we work, here are a few snapshots I took while visiting:

Here one of the private conference rooms allows you to go make a phone call without any distractions... in a very 70s hipster design sort of way:

The rumors are true... your thirst ends here with free sodas, juices, sparkling waters, and even my favorite: chocolate milk!

I think this is why David really wanted to hang out here... it has a very open, designer-esque feel to it... it would make a nice apartment no??

I'll find some other cool buildings around campus for you guys, so stay tuned.

Students versus employees: meet Charles and Barry from Channel 9

While speakers were speaking, people were listening, guards were guarding and cooks were cooking, Will and I met Charles Torre (the dude with the cam and interesting questions on Channel 9) and Barry Dorrans (nickname blowdart in the Channel 9's Coffeehouse).

We spoke about students, student life, Channel 9, what Charles studied, what Barry "studied", why we like Robotic Studio *grin* and a lot of other very important stuff!

Tune in if you ever wanted to know who the guys on Channel 9 (posters as in Barry and hard workers as in Charles) are and why Charles started to work for Microsoft after having studied something completely different!

Before creating the series on Interns at Microsoft (which will all be published here in the next few days), I had a very different perception of "internship". I assumed interning was for college credit and you were treated primarily as a gopher. That is SO FAR from the truth when it comes to interning at Microsoft. Most interns here have Masters degrees or above and their work is respected and credited. Imagine now...being an intern at Microsoft while only in High School. Let's get to know this prodigy.
