Meine Kollegin Lori Grosland erklärt die Kategorie "MashUp" genauer.

Das Ziel der MashUp Kategorie ist es, eine neue, nützliche Web 2.0. Anwendung zu erstellen, die mit dem Thema des Imagine Cup 2009 verbunden ist.
Unter Verwendung von Microsoft PopFly sollen bereits verfügbare Daten und Services aus dem Netz zu einer neuen Anwendung verknüpft werden, die tatsächlich genutzt wird.

Popfly Game Creator in beta!

Ever want to create a create a full blown game but don’t even know where to start? The Popfly team has created a solution for you with easy to understand and build.

New features are the ability to track high scores, Facebook integration and accomplishment badges. Best of all you can modify other people’s games to figure out how they built them! I actually used this feature on how to beat with my favorite game, Crayon Cannon.

If you’re still having issues building a game, the team even has a full tutorial in video and written instructions on their wiki on creating “Space Shooter”!

If you want to try something a bit more advanced, check out XNA Creator’s Club. You can build games that run on your Xbox, Zune and PC.

Microsoft and The Olympics

Beijing and China are, probably, the centre of the World these days thanks to the Olympics. I am sure that most of you are following the updates from the competitions and enjoyed the espectacular Opening Ceremony that happened at 8:08:08 of the August 8th in 2008 (of course, they chosed that time to pay tribute to Channel 8 :-))

What you might not know is that Microsoft technologies are present in the competition and making it possible in so many ways. For instance, Microsoft technologies are supporting the Olympics in the following areas:

1.- Thanks to Microsoft Silverlight Beta 2 now we can sit at home and watch the Olympics through the NBC Olympics webpage.

2.- We can also have fun playing sports games such as the games created with Microsoft Popfly using the Popfly Creator. Check these 10 sports games at http://www.popfly.com/sports/

3.- If you want to stay tuned to the Olympics while you do other things, you can simply install the newest version of the MSN Toolbar, available for Internet Explorer, which has as a new feature a "Beijing 2008 Olympics" tab, that will let you keep up-to-date with all the latest info from the Games, including quick links to Olympics news, the latest medal counts, videos from the games, and links to all the various sports...

4.- Finally, we can also find some Sharepoint-based solutions enabling the organizational tasks of Olympics. One of the most important systems is INFO 2008, and do you know what? Yes, it is supported by Sharepoint and makes use of the new Microsoft Search Server technology. 5.- Also, depending on your location, you will be able to find the NBC Olympics channel through your Windows Media Center (in the Online Media section).

Microsoft Inspiration Tour; Part 1 – Introduction to new Technology

This year we’ve been touring UK universities introducing Microsoft’s latest and greatest developer technologies to students and faculty on the Inspiration Tour.

So far we’ve visited over thirty campuses travelling in excess of 7000 miles to speak to 2400 students. We’ve had some great feedback about the content and thought it would be cool to bring it online at Channel8 so we booked out the studio at our UK offices and got recording!

This is the first of four sessions which introduces some of our new technologies including Popfly, Surface and XNA with some awesome demos.

Popfly started its open beta

Popfly is in open beta now! Everybody is free to join. Steve Ballmer announced that at the Web 2.0 summit yesterday.

What's Popfly? It is a cool website created by a small group at Microsoft. It allows you to create and share widgets, gadgets (even for the Windows Vista Sidebar), web sites and applications.

Popfly has a lot of pre-build components that can be used in own widgets or gadgets. All the components that are available can be ripped and used as base for your own creations. It's a lot of fun to create your own components or enhance existing ones. For example, read an RSS feed and display the videos contained with the geo-tag location in a small gadget that could be embedded into the Windows Sidebar or your own website. If the pre-build blocks are used it requires only no more than a few lines of JavaScript to create a new mashup.

Blocks that are build in Popfly might even get embedded into your Facebook profile. It's very easy: even without writing one line of code.

The Popfly website consists of two parts:

Popfly Creator is a set of online visual tools for building Web pages and mashups. The creator is built upon Silverlight and provides therefore a great web experience.
Popfly Space is an online community of creators where you can host, share, rate, comment and even remix creations from other Popfly users.
