&lt;p&gt;Xiao Li and Y. C. Ju of &lt;a href="http://research.microsoft.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Microsoft Research&lt;/a&gt; believe that this next innovation could be speech-based.  They have created a proof of concept called "VerbalMath" that allows the user to either type or speak commands to the tool which will then execute the mathematical steps required to help you arrive at a solution.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Xiao further explains that this is just the beginning and she hopes to see computer based tutoring in the near future.&lt;/p&gt;
