Max Builds a PC Series Part IX: The Monitor and more…

Wow this has been one epic series with major contributions from all of you 8ers out there… There are those of you that had little to no hardware knowledge having stumbled into this discussion early on and yet you researched and provided logical reasoning for your suggestions. A few of you were already seasoned hardware gurus (which led to some really fun debates when there were disagreements!) but it looks like even the veterans learned a thing or two.

In the end, I have to say that collaborating on this as a team has been a stellar experience that I think could very well become part of the DNA here on Channel 8. Feel free to make suggestions, of course, in the comments or in the Student Union.

Before we wrap things up we have just one more component to choose: the MONITOR. In my experience I have found this is where most people make the mistake of going as cheap as possible… or as large as possible. I personally believe two things: quality is paramount, and size is subjective to need. This is the part you will see the most, so definitely take care to make the right decision.

My vote: the Samsung 226BW. It fits with my gadget style likes and it has great specifications on top of that. Namely, a 2ms response rate on an LCD is wicked fast. In addition, it has a great brightness level and contrast ratio which is why it gets my vote. What do you guys think?

Here are the components we have chosen so far:

· The Case: Antec 182B
· The CPU: Intel QX9650
· The Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X38T-DQ6 (rev 1.1 if I can)
· The RAM: Corsair 2 Gigs
· The Hard Disks: Western Digital Raptor and Backup Drive
· The Graphics Card: ATi 3870 series
· The Optical Drives: A draw… I decided to go with a DVD burner, no HD or BluRay
· The Input Devices: Logitech MX Revolution and Microsoft Reclusa
· Monitor: still time to vote….
· Accessories: if you think I have forgotten anything, write it in the comments for this post ASAP!

On a side note, I will be traveling overseas for the next few weeks (Jan 11-28) and will have sporadic internet connectivity (if at all). Therefore you will see a little less from me during that time but I will check in as often as I can. As soon as I get back, hopefully the parts will have all arrived and I will get going on the build process, so sit tight!

This one I must strongly push for.

HP w2207 or the HP w2208.

Both have glossy screens which produce a nice vibrant color.

I love glossy screens also, but really, really, really!

30" Dell anybody?

I was thinking we were going dual screen right... so why not a 24-26" and an iiyama touchscreen? You wouldn't have to use the touchscreen but whenever you could utilize it it'd be cool!

I vote for a 26/27" Dell screen.

What about the benq fp94vw. It has  DVI, VGA, and HDMI ports. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014141

I also really like the apple cinema displays.
The samsung sounds like a good a monitor to me
Personally, I'm a huge fan of dual displays. It's much easier to get work accomplished and people are truly impressed by them. I've been one of those "whatever's cheapest and has decent reviews" monitor customers (and for most computer components), so I'm sure anything people recommend here will work well. That said, the Samsung is truly a beautiful monitor. As long as the lag rate is low enough and the image looks good, I'm a happy camper.

I just realized: we never really discussed sound cards (apart from deciding that motherboard sound is inferior). I'm really into music and audio editing, and I love my Creative Audigy 2 and Boston Acoustics speakers. I'd go with an X-FI and either a 3.1 or 5.1 speaker setup. I want some serious bass!

Max, this has been a great contest. Good luck to all, and may the most random person win!
I'm disappointed that TN panels have been mentioned so much! While 2ms response time is fantastic, it is done so at the expense of panel quality. Does anybody notice the difference between 8ms and 2ms?

Generally, anything that has ~178 degrees viewing angle, 16.7million (vs 16.2), and ~8ms response time is a S-IPS or S-PVA panel. Apart from a superior viewing angle (178 vs 160->165), IPS/VA panels have better colour reproduction, with S-IPS being the better of the two. You'll find that all high end LCD TV's have S-IPS or H-IPS panels in them.

Just for reference, all 22" panels are TN.

Dell's 2007WFP is either S-PVA or S-IPS, while the 2008wfp is TN. Their 2407WFP/2407WFP-HC are other fantastic quality monitors. The 3008wfp is S-IPS and has an array of inputs (2xDVI, VGA, HDMI?, DisplayPort), but may be a bit big/expensive.

There are other brands (such as Apple and NEC), but since I've got 2x2007wfp (mine + my wifes), I haven't looked into them.
