While an off the shelf conversion kit may be the easy way to go, it wasn't up to team "Acid Rain's" standards, efficiency desires, and cost effectiveness.

So they decided to make their own conversion from a diesel to vegetable oil powered engine which already gets better mileage than a Toyota Prius... and they think they can even better their current numbers with a few more tweaks. This car is carbon neutral and produces no sulfur exhaust which means no "Acid Rain," -- get the name now?? Wink

This was one of our favorite embedded development projects here at the Imagine Cup Finals 2008 in Paris, and they are currently finalists here in the competition awaiting the last results!

It's projects like this that make Imagine Cup the place to be...

this is brilliant work from the Irish lads, if you watch this you tube video, it shows how algae will solve the food shortage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyoKTbxerpQ

"1/10 of the state of new Mexico and convert it to algae production, it would meet all the energy demands for the whole United States"

And the beauty of algae is it does not have to be on agricultural land Smiley

And with the work of team ACID RAIN and the backing of Microsoft, running on algae vegetable oil, one of today's most feared problems will be solved!!

The best of luck all the way from Ireland Smiley
Great to see more Irish guys here on Channel8 Smiley
Looking forward to see how Acid Rain get on in the final 6.

Congratulations to the Acid Rain team. Brilliant idea, can't believe you drove your car all the way from Ireland to France on vegetable oil! What an achievement. Best of luck in the finals.

This is inspiring.

Imagine the possibilities if these guys had the opportunity to further develop and refine their project.

Carbon neutral travel for all without the need for any major alterations to your car.

Thanks for posting that other link kevinb.  It shows that this type of innovation really is a solution without any damage to rainforests and endangered species (Palm Oil plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia) or effect on food prices.
no problem, i really see this as the number one solution for a sustainable environment. this idea is real and along with algae production, this being implemented would spell the end of "acid rain" and reducing CO2 emissions, eliminating the food shortage, destroying rainforests and many others. The Oil Age is coming to an end, soon we shall see the Voila age Wink Wink

well they came 2nd, always thought they would of come 1st just for driving their project all the way to paris apart from all the realistic advantages this solution brings, but brilliant achievement from the irish lads, they come away as winners and also congratz to all teams they made it to paris as everyone should be proud of what they have achieved.

already cant wait for next year's Imagine Cup Big Smile
