Honestly I don't use AV software either....... I'm set up so easily for a reformat that if I ever have even a mediocre issue, I can format and be up and running again within the hour. Although it's even rare that I have to with Windows Vista.
CAVEAT: I know what I'm doing... your mom probably doesn't so don't tell her "Max said it's ok not to run AV!"
