7 teams from different parts of Russia came to Moscow to participate in the local final to see who will represent the country in Paris. It was an incredible event with more than 400 visitors, a Roundtable for Young Entrepreneurs, featuring Nick Surin (Imagine Cup 2005 Worldwide winner), representatives from several companies and venture funds), a Blog Contest, Xbox zone and amazing projects…

The event was opened by a Rock Band “Footprints on Water” from Chelyabinsk – they wrote a song specifically about the Imagine Cup!

After the opening, the competition split into parts: on main stage, in front of 400+ audience, 7 software design teams from different parts of Russia presented their projects, while competitors in Algorithms and Project Hoshimi competitions started to work on their problems in the “behind-the-glass” style of open space, observable by others. Following teams’ presentations, there was an Entrepreneurship Panel and Roundtable, where all students could ask their questions on how to turn their ideas into successful project. The panel included Nick Surin, Imagine Cup 2005 worldwide winner (he also served as a member of the judging panel), representatives from sponsor companies, venture funds, etc. While students were busy participating in the panel or relaxing in the special Xbox zone the judges were busy making the final decision.

As a result:

· 1st place was given to the joint team from several St.Petersburg Universities (SPbSU, SPbSU ITMO, SPbSU “LETI”) with the project “Arina” – the system to model the fire spread in forests and to help chose the right method for fire extinguishing. Their presentation was by far the most spectacular, and the level of problems they were handling is amazing!

· 2nd place went to the team from Nizhny Novgorod with .Life project (aimed at modeling the ecological situation in cities, taking into account highways, buildings and green areas on the map), and 3rd place – to the joint project from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Baumann Moscow State Technical University with AirRanger project (they designed a small helicopter to track the fire and actually made it fly into the audience during their presentation!).

· Special Entrepreneurship prize from Intel was given to the team from South Urals State University (Chelyabinsk) with FreeWay project, which used GPS-equipped cars and centralized server to prevent traffic jams.

nevertheless Imagine Cup in Russia is still alive, PhotoCup.ru is still receiving entries for the Digital photography category.

There are more local finals happening now all around the world and they will be here soon!

in reply to Imagine Cup 2008 | Russian Finals

<evnet:views>12517</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel8.msdn.com/5380/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>The Russian Imagine Cup Finals took place in Moscow, in the popular student venue of Moscow Aviation Institute Club, and Channel 8 was there. [Imagine Cup 08 is coming...]

Just to put you in the mood, we have here some of the short films that won in Korea and India

With this one Team Skylined from Poland won the Imagine Cup 2007 Short Film competition with their film, "Pitchfordsville". Their film addressed the 2007 theme, "Imagine a world where technology enables a better education for all."

In the words of filmmakers Julia Górniewicz and Jacek Barcikowski: "The story may seem light and funny, but if you look closer, you will notice a deeper thought behind it. The technology which enables a better education for all does not necessarily has to be directly connected with the education itself. We believe that people often cannot pursue self-growth because the world stands in their way. They are born into certain circumstances and they have to take care of the living first not being able to choose what they want to do with their lives. Whether it’s a child working in a factory or a person dealing with disability, technology can help people overcome the daily problems so they can focus on exploring their personalities and following the path of knowledge. This hand drawn animation – with mystery inspired by the Tim Burton’s style and some abstract humor – is a tale, read by the narrator. The purpose-composed music adds some spooky vibe to the movie. "

Hello Student, and welcome to this totally awesome guide to using DreamSpark! I have written this guide so that it is easy to follow for any student with any technical ability level.

I will show you how easy it is to download a product from the service and get it all up and running quickly. In this example, I will be assuming you have signed up for the service and are ready to download a product. This example will show you how to download and install Expression Studio

1. Select a Product for Download

For this example, we will be downloading Expression Studio. Selecting this option will bring you to the download page

2. Download the Product

Select that you have read and agree to the terms and conditions and select the download method you would like to use

Both methods will get you to the same place, but the Download manger will allow you to resume the download should you want to download the file over separate sessions or if the file should fail for some reason.

The Web Browser option will allow you to download the file in the same manner you would usually download file from the internet, but it does not support the features the download manger uses.

Now sit back and relax while the file is downloaded :)

3. Create a Product CD using ISO Recorder

You will notice that the downloaded file is of the ISO file format, but what is an ISO and what do you do with it?

The best way to think of an ISO is as a “Container File” that contains all of the files that you would expect to find on the product CD

An ISO file is a CD Image. Try to imagine that somebody has taken of the files off the product CD and put them inside in this single ISO file. But what do you do with this now?

You cannot burn this file directly to a CD, this will not work. You need to expand the ISO file on to a CD instead. Unfortunately, this is not supported directly in Vista or XP directly, and a free piece of software is needed.

There are many applications out there to burn ISO files, but I find ISO Recorder the easiest to use. This can be downloaded from http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm and the site also has a quick step by step on finding out your windows version if you don’t already know

Once this is installed, burning an ISO file is a breeze, simply right click the downloaded file, and select the “Copy Image to CD option”

You will then be presented with the following screen:-

Put a blank disc into your recorder, select a burning speed and click the next button

Now just sit back and relax while the iso is recorded to your blank disc.

4. Checking the Disc and installing the Product

When complete, if you view the contents of the CD from My Computer

You will see that the ISO has been unpacked and you now have a disc that functions in exactly the same way as one obtained at retail.

Right clicking the CD drive and selecting “Run Autoplay” will launch the setup for the given product, here is an example of the Expression Studio welcome screen

Finally, you can now delete the ISO file from your computer and keep the newly created product CD in case you need to reinstall the product at a later date

And the most important part of the process, enjoy it!

in reply to DreamSpark user guide (by Kris Athi)

<evnet:views>2586</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel8.msdn.com/2260/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>
