TechNet Plus - contact information?

I know I already have a thread on a similar theme but this is about getting in contact with someone...... ANYONE who can pick up a damn phone or reply to an e-mail about TechNet subscriptions! I've been trying since Monday to phone the number listed for the UK on the contact page but it constantly, and I mean every single time I try, rings out after 2 minutes of nobody answering. The e-mail I sent which stated 2 business days for a reply has now gone past 2 business days without reply and I'm still sitting here no nearer a clue as to what's going on since the status page for my order hasn't budged since Friday.

Has anyone been as unfortunate as me and had similar problems? If so, what did you do and who did you contact? At this point I'm pretty much set on cancelling my order, which is a shame, all because I cannot get a single word reply from anybody. Before it's pointed out, yes I know they could be busy but how busy do you have to be where a phone goes unanswered 3 days straight? Anyone that can help, please do :/

Do programming languages crack brains at all

I have heard from a wide range of people that to a programming language one needs to be smart and sharp.I kind of heard also that a the first year of a University one gotta learn either C# or C++.Are any of these hard at all?I would like to know how stuff work out when you enter the University for the first year and you are going to offer Computer Science?

WPF vs. Windows Forms Question

Alright, so I've gotten Visual Studio 2008 kicking with a few cool addins (Power Commands, modified template, etc...) and am looking to begin developing an application I've thought about for a while now. I'm an incredibly big, ridiculously good at trivia, movie fan and I want to build an application that will keep track of all my movies that I have seen, that I want to see, that I want to see again, maybe include some ratings, and who knows what else. I've been learning C# over the past few weeks and have gotten to the point where I'm ready to free form with an application like this.

Here's my question: Should I use WinForms or WPF? I understand WPF would be better if I had video or 3D animation, etc..., but is that the only difference? Are there benefits to picking it over WinForm or vice-versa? Anyone out there have a preference?

(I'm incredibly interested to hear what you guys think. However, I will mention that in learning C# through Head First With C# (which I highly recommend) I've been using Windows Forms Applications. I will probably use that one to begin, but is there a way to port it to WPF later? Basically, what are the big differences between the two?)

Or, heavy discounts on MS press books, just paying for materials and S&H.

It would be nice if students were given these tech books for free/ discount, as we now have the software but not much else...

I have probably spen over $100 on Microsoft Press books this month, and now when I want to move on, I'm pretty much SOL because I can't keep shelling out this much $$ for books that aren't required for classes.

ISO to CD im stuck and mad

hi,
i have never had this problem before when making an ISO file to cd. i am trying to put dreamspark visual studio's onto a cd or dvd and i read the tutorial on here that says to download the program from Alex Fienman. I have used the program before but now i can't burn it because the file is to big and i have already wasted to many dvd's on this with other programs and none work. so please if anyone can point me to a different program or how to make it work so i can use it please do.
I am using:
Windows XP SP 2.

I have tried the programs i haven't tried an the others i get the same message its a txt file that states:
"This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system
that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification."
I have no clue wat to do. I thought I downloaded it wrong so i redownloaded it and it gives me the same thing if i extract it or burn it to a dvd. i've used bout 6 dvd-rw's already and im gettin tired of waste them. so thank you guys who helps but if you can figure it out please tell me. that tutorial didn't answer my question bout that read me file.

Download Manager Fatal Error - Could not find requested file

Hi,

I am trying to download visual studio 2008 professional and 2005 studio but, when I click on the recommended download manager link it opens the popup, then rhw download manager then errors: -

Download Mnager Fatal Error
Could not find the requested file on the server.
Contact the author of the page that contains the link.
This download will be cancelled.

I have also tried the browser download but I only get to just over 600mb and then the download ends, ond about 2 - 300mb for 1 disk of VS2005 Pro.

What do I do now?

it doesn't support vista.

At the same time i can use it compiling in XP.

Help! I downloaded the iso file for VS 2008. I burned a copy of the file to a disk. The disk should be bootable to allow me to install the software however, that is not happening. When I insert the disk it reopens my recordnow software I used to create the disk. So I do I get this software installed. This is so crazy to me.

Continuing on from "Paul Builds a HTPC" series, I've decided to build a Windows Home Server, but this time (at the request of Donald) I'd like your help. Unfortunately again I cannot be giving this away, so its' purely for participation value. I'll try and round up some prizes (maybe Expression Studio 2? I'll have to see what restrictions the copy I'll be getting has), but can't promise anything.

When building most "normal" computers (desktop use/work use/whatever), the two main factors are usually performance and price. The usual process is to get as much power in to as small a budget as possible.

While this remains true for my desired server, there are other characteristics that have equal or greater importance. For example, low power usage is very important due to the "always on" nature of a server, and because of the location the server will run, low noise is equally important.

If you've got an opinion or thought on what CPU or motherboard I should be using, I'd love to hear it, either here or commenting on my blog post (which has some more preliminary information about low power/cost CPU/motherboards)

Visual Studio 2005 install Error 1305

I originally had another install of Visual Studio 2005 - I removed all but the SQL Server that was installed with it and installed VS 2008 offered here.

I decided to finally install XNA GS and it required VS2005 or C# Express.

I tried to install VS 2005 from the Channel8 download. I chose just C# and NET-related utils. I got to where it asked for Disk 2 (my original install long ago was on DVD) and it fails with this message:

Error 1305.Error reading from file f:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\GuiDebug\shortcutCLRDbg32.txt. Verift that the file exists and that you can access it.

I drilled down and the file exists:
Size is listed as "38 bytes (38 bytes)"

When I try to manually open it, Notepad gives:
Cannot open the F:....
Make sure a disk is in the drive you specified.

I then tried to reburn the cd, without exiting the install. I got the same problem. I then downloaded another copy of disk 2. Before burning yet another cd, I did a windiff of the 2 iso's and they diffed as identical. So I did not reburn.

Any idea what is going on? If it is a link - it isn't appearing to 'connect' to whatever it is. Perhaps something is not being installed since I have msvs2008 installed? I never installed this 2005 version download before but I assume it works or there would be many posts :)

After I finish my programming assignment I plan on trying to scrap the install of 2008 :( and redo it all starting with 2005 (just C# and then xna) then 2008 full.

Any other ideas?

Well I want to throw an invitation for all the World Wide Microsoft Student Partners to develop a usefull and easy application, for us, starting with a simple tool to let us post our "Report Activities", then upgrade this little software with plug-ins, and then, publish this software in Codeplex for everyone.

Who said I? any ideas, suggestions, feedback?

The first thing I think was a simple WPF Application or Windows Forms but over .NET Framework 3.0 or higher to "publish" will be necesary web services, WCF wil help alot... but we will need support from the ADE's to test the services or something similar.

the name I think could be cool, is Mithra, like the persian god means "Friend" :)

TechNet Plus - anyone have it?

Since I'm working towards a career in IT with Microsoft Windows and Server products I've been considering purchasing a TechNet plus subscription for quite a few months now but there are a few things confusing me despite reading the FAQs so if anyone has one or can clarify the items below I'd appreciate it a lot. For the purposes of this post I'm talking about the Operating System subscriptions only.

MSDN are mainly aimed at developers whereas TechNet Plus seems to be aimed at people who test and deploy systems, perhaps administrators planning and testing a deployment. Would that be a fair description of the two?

TechNet Plus is evaluation but without time limits or restrictions, what I'm not sure about here is why label it as such? Is it not the same as MSDN software? You download it, burn to DVD (or use some other method, maybe network installation) and install then enter a product key. How is that any different or is it not different at all? The word evaluation can have different meanings depending on how Microsoft intend it, a bit like prizes with time limits (see my other thread if you don't know what I'm talking about).

Basically I'm just looking for some clarification on these points so if anyone can help it'd be appreciated :)
